About Us
Our History Plans for a Methodist Church in Eldridge started in 1964 with the purchase of a 4-1/2 acre site at 604 S. 2nd Street. A feasibility study was conducted in 1970 and a steering committee from St. John's United Methodist Church in Davenport was formed. The Iowa Conference Board of Missions purchased a house across the street from the site and in June 1972, the Rev. Robert S. Crandall was appointed as first pastor of the congregation. The first service was held on June 25, 1972 in the basement of the Eldridge Co-op with 84 in attendance. On November 19th, 105 charter members became part of the new congregation. Church school classes, youth meetings and meetings of the women's group were held in the homes of the members. Plans for a church building were begun. Ground was broken for the church on June 2, 1974 with the first service in the new building held on Feb. 1, 1975. When the building was consecrated in on June 8, 1975 there were 165 members in the congreagation. In October of 1983 a classroom addition to the building was begun. A service of consecration and dedication of the original building and new addition was held on May 20, 1984. In September 1984 the congregation began to hold two worship services to accommodate the increased membership. Recent projects include the surfacing of the parking lot and refurbishing the church's interior to unify and brighten the sanctuary. Over the years the church has been an active participant in the ecumenical movement in the North Scott area, through worship services as well as the organization of the North Scott Human Services and it's food pantry. In January 1983 the church became the site for the congregate meals program for senior citizens held three days a week. In 1992 the church and it's youth played a leading role in establishing the "Hearts and Hammers" program in the North Scott area. The church is also known for it's choir and musical programs which are many and varied, including madrigal dinner productions, Christmas and Easter cantatas, and the recording of the album, "Just a Closer Walk" in 1980. |
